Insurance options

  1. Check if your credit card has a rental car insurance policy included
  • These are sometimes limited based on location (e.g. not available near your permanent residence). This is typically mentioned in the small print.
  1. Check if your employer, union or other organization has negotiated rental car insurance policy
  2. Check if the rental car aggregator provides an insurance
  • These are typically order of magnitude cheaper than what you get from the car rental company.
  1. Insurance companies specialized in rental car insurance
  • Based on my limited experience, these are about the same price as rental car aggregator's insurance. I paid about 80 Euros for a two week insurance.
  • I have used rentalcover.com few times. Please note that I never had to make a claim so can't say how smooth it is.
  • Another alternative is cover4rentals.com/
  1. As a last resort, use the rental car company's insurance policy.
  • The price is typically given at the counter when picking up the car, so be prepared to double the rental cost.
  • The only benefit of this insurance is that they don't hold your deposit after you return the car.

Real life examples:

  1. Chase Sapphire card
  • Free insurance
  1. DiscoverCars.com insurance
  • Paid between €48.82 and €82.68 (usually ~€70) for two week rental for a small SUV
  1. Rentalcover.com insurance
  • Paid around €88 (not much variation) for two week rental for a small SUV
  1. Rental car company's policy (Tangerine Rent a Car, Drive On Holidays, Budget by Avis)
  • Paid between €200 and €300 for two week rental for a small SUV. These were the largest out of pocket options with €2500+ deductible. The agents always tried to push for the option that had no deductible and costed 400 to 500 euros.
